My Favourite Posts From Around the Web This Week
This week a boy fell into a gorilla enclosure and immediately people began judging the parenting skills of his mother. Admittedly my first thought was to wonder how he ended up in there and to think about how terrible it was that a beautiful gorilla died as a result. Now I don’t know anything substantial about gorillas or their behaviour. I do however now a little something about little kids and how quickly they can move or get into trouble.
Kids get hurt and into trouble all the time and that is ok. My kids regularly have injuries on their bodies. scraped knees, cuts, bruises and general aches and pains that come from playing hard. Sometimes I could prevent those injuries by stopping them from taking a particular risk and it I often have to remind myself to let them play, climb and explore. Taking risks is how they learn. Taking risks is how they grow. Taking risks is how they discover their independence and test their ability. Sara does a great job of capturing our kids’ need to take risks in this piece.
None of us know what we are doing and we all figure it out as we go. Knowing these eight things Mike has captured here would definitely have helped as I started into what feels like a grand series of trial and error experiments.

Since Father’s Day is this month I decided to write a series of posts to help new dads get ready or adapt to the job before them. This is the first post in that series and it is great.

This post is still very popular with the girl guide set. I am pretty sure that a significant portion of the global supply of girl guide leaders has now seen this post. I have great hopes for these badges to be made official in the coming year.
