“It’s the action, not the fruit of the action, that’s important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there’ll be any fruit. But that doesn’t mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.”
– Mahatma Ghandi
I’ve never met Oren Miller – also known as @BloggerFather – in real life. I haven’t really interacted with him either. And yet he has made a difference in my life and the lives of hundreds of men and fathers. By extension he has and will continue to make a difference in the lives of thousands of children of those men.
You see, I am a member of a secret society, one founded by Oren. He created a space for dad bloggers to come together and meet through Facebook. He created a space and a community where men and dads from around the world can talk to each other and share our successes and challenges as parents. He created a safe space for us to vent our frustrations and find support. I’m not sure about the other dads in the group, but I am not great at making time for friends and building my own community of men.
Most of my time goes into my family, my job and schemes to bring in more money for my family. So when I stumbled across this online community I asked to join and Oren let me into the party. As a result I have become a better writer, and through reading about the experiences of other dads I have become a better dad. I am regularly reminded to put aside life on the outside and give more time to my kids. I have learned and been reminded that I can be more patient. I have been inspired and challenged by this community of men and it is all because of Oren. I don’t think Oren knew where this group would go and what it would and still could become when he created it.
This is a tribute to the group as much as it is to Oren. You never know what kind of impact you are going to have on people until you make the effort. You never know what the fruits of your actions may be.
Oren died today and he will live on in all of us he has connected and influenced.
