Welcome to New Patron – STEM Camp!

STEMCamp.ca

Today I am excited to announce a new patron here at the DadGoesRound writing factory. For the next couple of months I will be partnering with STEM Camp to bring you weekly posts on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math activities. I think all kids are natural scientists and we as a society do a poor job encouraging and supporting their interests. At my house we often have math quizzes at dinner time and they aren’t started by us adults. Frankly sometimes the questions are a little tough to answer…

I personally don’t have a strong background in STEM and I have struggled to come up with activities and ways to stimulate my daughters’ interests and encourage them to dive deeper, which is why I am so enthusiastic about this partnership.

STEM Camp Locations

STEM Camp operates across Ontario, Canada and is expanding into my hometown of Ottawa this summer. The camps will be operating at two locations – Carleton University and Algonquin College. Each week is a different theme featuring STEM activities throughout the week. Some of those activities will be featured here each Wednesday – as my daughters demonstrate how much smarter they are than me!

STEM Camp Theme Weeks

My daughters are excited to be taking part in the CSI and Scooby Doo Mystery Week. They are regularly joining forces with friends to investigate mysteries and they are big fans of Scooby Doo so this camp will give them a leg up in their investigative skills. Other theme weeks at STEM Camp include Minecraft, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Ocean Adventures. Each theme week runs once in July and then again in August. If you are looking for fun, day camp opportunities where your kids can learn how to identify candy thieves and you live in one of the many southern Ontario communities where STEM Camp is operating this year I encourage you to check them out. You can find all of the details at www.STEMCamp.ca.

If you live in Southern or Eastern Ontario, check out STEMCamp.ca for great summer camps for kids.Click To Tweet

I Know All About The Sexing

Image of two boys talking with text "I know all about the sexing"

5yo Friend to my 8yo: You are wearing a ring. Are you married?

My 8yo: No. I’m not even a teenager. I’m too young to get married

Other friend:  You can have babies when you are a teenager, but you have to wait until you are an adult to get married.

5yo: Yeah, when your stomach is ready a baby can just grow in there.

My 8yo: No. a man and a woman have to have sex to make a baby.

8yo sister of 5yo: We know all about the sex

5yo: Yeah, I know all about the sexing.

8yo sister: Our parents don’t like us talking about the sex in front of my sister. She is too little.

Last Night Beer Restarted Puberty

Ottawa Winter Brewfest 2015

Last night I went out of the house without my wife or any children. This morning I feel like a teenage boy starting puberty.

I had the opportunity to go to the first night of the Winter Brewfest in Ottawa last night and while I was there I may have sampled one or two local craft beers. Of course I carefully swirled the beer to release the flavours and aromas before delicately sipping the sample of each beer. Unfortunately there were no buckets supplied for spitting out the mouthful before trying the next one. The only solution Continue reading

How Can We Stop Them?

image of a man driving

I first wrote this when I was 17 years old…

“On November 8, 1992 a man was on his way home from his friend’s house.  He had had a couple of drinks with his friend before he left for home.  his friend tried to stop him, but he wouldn’t listen.  On his way home the car left the road, flipped over several times, hit a telephone pole and fell into a water-filled ditch.  That man drowned.  That man was my uncle.
