16 Most Canadian Songs

Happy Canada Day!

US President Barack Obama was in town this week and when he delivered a speech in Parliament, he said “the world needs more Canada.” Apparently he was talking about troops and Nato, but I can misinterpret and take his words out of context if I want. I’m sure what he really meant is that the world needs more Canadian music.

Everyone already knows about global Canadian Superstars Paul Anka, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, The Guess Who, Joni Mitchell, Trooper, Rush, Corey Hart, Bryan Adams, Glass Tiger, Alanis Morrisett, Sarah McLachlan, Celine Dionne, Shania Twain, Maestro Fresh Wes, Barenaked Ladies, Broken Social Scene, Drake, Arcade Fire, DeadMau5, Michael Buble, Feist, Justin Bieber and even Nickleback.

The same music scene that produced these globally known artists, also gave rise to these artists and songs.

Great Big Sea – Meri-Mac

Tragically Hip – Wheat Kings

Corb Lund – Long Gone to Saskatchewan

Snow – Informer

Tom Cochrane – Life is a Highway

Craig Cardiff – Safe Here

What can be more Canadian than accompaniment by former Governor General Michaelle Jean?

Maestro Fresh Wes – Let Your Backbone Slide

Pursuit of Happiness – I’m an adult now

Spirit of the West – If Venice is Sinking

Tribe Called Red – Electric Pow Wow

Stompin Tom – Canada Day

Serena Ryder – Stompa

Kathleen Edwards – Hockey Skates

Dream Warriors – My Definition

Rascalz – Northern Touch

Log Driver’s Waltz

Happy Canada Day Everyone!

While the girls and I were having dinner last night, The Tragically Hip’s “New Orleans is Sinking” came on the radio. For those of you who aren’t Canadian and haven’t heard The Hip, you should check them out. They comprised a significant component of the soundtrack of my youth and young adulthood.

I’m sorry #ottawa. I left my snow tires on specifically to avoid anymore of this nonsense. Yesterday I had a conversation about the prospect of taking them off. Now I have to leave them on until July.
