Through no intention of my own, I spent today cutting things.
First up, I cut short my sleep. This time it wasn’t because kids woke me up. It was entirely because I my muscles were stiff. I had a massage yesterday – which was pretty great. The downside is that she told me I would likely experience stiffness and aches for a day or two like when I exercise because she was working out knots and helping to lengthen the muscles. So sure enough I woke up this morning feeling pretty achey.
Eventually everyone else got up and there was talk of potential thunderstorms in the afternoon. So I was left with little choice, but to actually go out and cut the grass in the backyard. I hadn’t cut it yet this season and as a result it was a long, thick mess. Even though it isn’t clear from this photo, you can take my word for it that some of that grass at the back is eight – ten inches tall. Not so awesome with a push mower.
After two hours and with some help from a weed whacker, the jungle was tamed and we now have carpet length grass in the backyard. In the process I lost about two pounds through sweat. It was a pretty warm day here.
After copious amounts of water and some lunch I retreated to the basement for some more cutting. I have a craft show coming up in a few weeks where I will be selling my Thomas Woodcrafts products. I need to ramp up production to make sure I have enough stock for the show. I am pretty depleted right now because I just dropped off a number of my products at a local toy store this week. I’m not gonna lie, I am pretty pumped to have my products for sale in a toy store! So today I cut out a couple of trucks and some train pieces. I use recycled and rescued scrap wood and the work today took quite a bit of sanding to find the beauty in these pieces. Still plenty of work to do on these, but some good progress today.
Then it was back outside to my freshly cut lawn. This time to tackle a small tree in our backyard. Sadly the main portion of the tree died and the trunk was starting to split so it had to come down so it didn’t fall on anyone. Unfortunately we are losing all of our trees. When we bought this house we had large trees in the front and back yard, now we only have this little one. Both the big ones had to come down. One due to rot and large branches falling off of it. The other was killed by the Emerald Ash Borer and was removed by the City. I left part of this one standing because the girls have taken to climbing it and I didn’t want to remove it completely. I cut off the dead branches and will keep and eye on the trunk. It should be ok for climbing for this summer anyway. Conveniently it poured rain while I was in the midst of cutting down the final branch so I got a pretty good soaking. 15 minutes later the sun was back…
The tree was not happy with my decision to cut it down to size and it demonstrated its displeasure by attacking me and giving me a cit of my own.
On to the final cuts of the day. This time it was dinner. Homemade personal pita pizzas for everyone.
I think I might be sore again tomorrow…
