Kids are sticky
We have three kids and as such you can presume our house is a mess, pretty much all of the time. Just like any parents, 75% of our waking hours are spent picking things up, wiping up spilled drinks and sweeping under the table. Another 20% is dedicated to investigating why everything is so sticky. The remaining 5% of our time is spent trying to get our kids ready for school or bed.
All of the dust
In addition to the self-replicating debris that explodes from everywhere anytime a kid moves through a cleanish room, we have dust on stuff. Some dust floats off of the children and drifts in from the street. The rest of the dust – possibly most of the dust – is a consequence of me sanding lots of wood.
My glasses are usually covered in wood dust so I can’t really distinguish between dust on stuff and dust on my glasses. My partner, however, is not a big fan of the dust. She likes it when the dust goes away.
Don’t forget about the cat
We have a cat. She has hair. Her hair falls out onto everything. Also she tracks bits of litter all over the house.
The Room
Our oldest two girls share a room. It is not a big room. They have loft beds so that we could fit dressers / desks under their beds. When I built the beds I made one set of legs a bookcase so they would have space for all of their books. Over the years they have added doll furniture, art projects, Lego, lots of books and clothes that weigh too much to carry down the hall to the laundry basket.
In spite of an active archeological dig in their room – we have been trying to uncover the floor and any other flat surface in their room – they continue to live in the room and follow the narrow paths to their beds.
The lived-in house
It is extremely unlikely that our house will every grace the cover or pages of a home decor magazine or even get featured on this blog. We don’t have enough white on our walls or stainless steel in our kitchen to qualify. We also can’t keep the floors clean for five minutes, except for that time when my partner and kids left for a week and I cleaned things up and confined myself to one room so I wouldn’t make a mess of the rest of the house.
Mopify to the rescue
My partner had a birthday last week and she decided earlier this month that as a present to herself she was going to get someone to come and thoroughly clean our house before her birthday so that she could enjoy a clean house for the week. She decided on Mopify after reading about them on our friend Mike’s Blog.
We did the usual things you do before someone is coming to clean your house, we picked things up and did some general cleaning so the place didn’t look like it had been ransacked. When the cleaner arrived we also told her to ignore ‘The Room” as it was a hopeless case. We were concerned about her going missing in there and having to call for a search and rescue team. Plus we figured it would add to our bill considerably to have her spend hours in there cleaning up.
She ignored our instruction. She felt The Room was something she could tackle and resolve for us. It took her half an hour and left it something to behold.
This is a room that was an utter and complete disaster before she tackled it. It has not had this much floor space for years. We do big cleanups and clear outs a few times a year in addition to the ongoing picking up. Neither of us can remember this room looking this good.
In addition to this amazing piece of work she also managed to get the stubbornly dirty corners of the bathroom clean and finished the rest of the house in the agreed upon and paid for amount of time.
The recommendation
If you live in Ottawa or Toronto and you need some cleaning done, call Mopify. You can also book online. They did an amazing job at a very reasonable price. We will definitely have them in again.
