Why Are We So Afraid?

2015-02-03 by dadgoesround 2 Comments

Image of a vaccine being injected into a child's arm

This morning as I was attempting to get my kids ready for school my six-year old put on a solid show of resistance. To be fair she feels crappy because she has a sore throat and didn’t want to go to school. She was also refusing cough syrup or anything to drink. As I have written before she is resistant to those things that might help her. She is adventurous and risk-seeking, but she is afraid of getting a needle or having a band aid removed. This from the girl who broke her arm in the fall and had to have pins inserted. She handled this experience very well and with limited complaints. She seems to be afraid of the little things (a needle prick, medicine that might taste bad or food she might not like for that matter).

She is not so different from many adults. [Read more…]

How I became a Spornosexual

Becoming a Spornosexual

I recently discovered that it was time to update my look. I was excited to learn that I should be striving to be a spornosexual. I have been somewhat lost ever since Queer Eye for the Straight Guy was cancelled. I relied on the guys to teach me how to dress and groom myself. Now I have found out that I can step it up a notch. All I needed to do is burn off all of my body fat, spend a bit of time in the gym so that I could get ripped and remove all of my body hair.

Now I didn’t really have the time or money to get the professional assistance that could have helped me achieve my goals so I figured out a few spornosexual hacks to get it all done.  [Read more…]

Take a Stand Against Violence

2014-12-06 by dadgoesround Leave a Comment

Twenty-five years ago today a man walked into L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal and killed 14 women. He killed them because they were women. He killed them because he felt that feminists had ruined his life. I am not going to name him because it is easy to find his name and he is not the one we should be remembering. December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada and the date was chosen to mark this massacre. [Read more…]

I’m disappointed in everyone who knew

Last week was a bit of a challenging week around our house. Monday my six-year old broke her arm and had to hang out in hospital for a couple of days to have the bone set and pins inserted and then a cast put on her arm, plus recovery time from the general anaesthetic. I picked her and my wife up from the hospital Wednesday morning and they drove me to the airport so I could fly to Toronto for a couple of days of meetings. We weren’t all in the same house between Monday morning and Thursday night. Thankfully my mum was able to come up for a few days to help out while I was in Toronto. Throughout the week I have been reading and listening to the evolving Jian Ghomeshi story. [Read more…]

The Luxury of Peace

2014-07-23 by dadgoesround 1 Comment

Yesterday I wrote a post about my daughter listening to news reports about the plane shot down over Ukraine. This morning I woke up thinking about how lucky I am that my biggest concern about the conflicts happening in the world is how my children will react to the news about those conflicts. [Read more…]
