Becoming the Cool Dad
This weekend I hit a milestone in my #dadlife. Actually it might have been the peak. For a moment in time – possibly a brief one – I became a cool dad. We downloaded a few songs that my kids like. Not the Raffi and nursery rhyme types, but the Katy Perry, Taylor Swift kind.
I was driving my kids back from my mum’s after they spent a week with her and I put on Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’ on in the van and my eight year old got a big grin on her face and shouted “Daddy I didn’t know you had Firework on your phone!”
Of course I feed on positive reinforcement and I want to keep my current cool dad status so I need to get to work building a playlist of songs my kids like. This means I need to find out what all the kids are listening to these days. I don’t listen to commercial radio so I have some work ahead of me…
I am going to ride this wave as long as I can, because I know there will be a certain point in the not-so-distant future when I am obligated to switch to embarrassing parent mode. I will have to start wearing socks with my sandals, loud Hawaiian shirts in the winter and making awkward statements about bodily functions and ear wax sculptures whenever her friends are within earshot. The uncool dad stage is something I have been training for my whole life. Being the cool dad is unfamiliar territory and I hope I can keep it together for at least a few weeks.
Help me out, what songs do your pre-teens like that will help me to maintain my cool dad cred?
