Don’t be all judgy about how mums choose to feed their babies. Sometimes breastfeeding is not the right choice. Sometimes the bottle you are judging is full of breast milk. It is more important that the baby is getting fed than the specific type of food or container.
Our first kid was not a good breastfeeder and in spite of getting help it was not the right choice for our family, for my wife’s sanity and especially not for my daughter.
We regularly see stories of dads being celebrated for doing ordinary parenting. We also then see people talking about how moms don’t get celebrated for doing the same things and people talking about how great it is to see a dad actually doing some parenting.
The thing is, dads do parent. Not all dads are good at it. Some are stuck in the 1950’s and believe that parenting is women’s work – such as a certain US presidential contender. We need role models. We need to see examples of dads baking cakes, cooking dinner, doing laundry and their daughters’ hair, etc. Every image we see of dads that are parenting shows the dads who aren’t doing it, that they can. Every example piles on the previous one and helps to shift the mindset that parenting is for women.
I am a historian by training – or at least that is what my university degree says – so I am always interested in new bits of historical knowledge. Really how can you avoid clicking on this title? It was actually a very interesting article that touched on art history, culture and shifting perceptions of masculinity. A great read.
